At the Swan Hotel we are committed to working in a sustainable way, we are undertaking the following actions in order to achieve this.

We have joined the green tourism business scheme as an indication of our sustainable
practice and have gained a silver award.

Five things you can do to be environmentally friendly
At The Swan we are loyal advocates of the green policy and like to follow basic guidance from the energy saving trust on ways to help us be greener. If you feel as passionate as we do please take the time to read this document and follow the guidance.
1.Conserve energy – reduce energy consumption by switching off the lights and closing windows if the heating is on
2.Give the car a break too – Suffolk is a beautiful place to explore on foot, by bike or public transport
3.Shop locally – buy local produce, they give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities
4.Reduce, reuse, recycle – try to avoid over packaged foods and say no to that extra carrier bag, try and recycle any waste you have
5.Be wise – use water wisely by turning off taps when brushing teeth and read our towel policy
1.Our mission statement reflects our commitment to the environment.
2.The Swan Hotel has an active green committee, with representatives from various departments, that meets once a month to discuss and implement steps that protect the environment.
3.We re-use all paper, separate paper for recycling every day and card and paper is recycled. The front office only prints documents when necessary and use other means to reduce waste such as making telephone calls and emailing rather than issuing memoranda or sending letters.
4.The night porters and duty managers ensure that all unnecessary lights and appliances are switched off between the hours of 11 pm and 7 am.
5.The housekeeping department and kitchen use only biodegradable cleaning products.
6.We are currently taking active steps to monitor water consumption with the view to reduce the use of as much water as possible whilst still keeping to Health & Safety regulations in terms of food preparation and cleanliness.
7.We reuse all our plastic bottles in the housekeeping department and kitchen by only ordering cleaning products in refill pouches.
8.We have soap and moisturiser dispensers in the public toilets to reduce wastage of product.
9.We recycle all glass bottles and jars from the bar and restaurant.
10.We reuse all plastic tubs from the kitchen by cleaning them and using them for storage.
11.We recycle all our ink cartridges from the hotel.
12.All ripped linen is returned to the supplier who launders it and recycles it into cleaning rags.
13.We recycle used light bulbs and batteries.
14.All waste food is recycled.
Green Tourism Award
The Swan at Lavenham is a Green Hotel and has been awarded a Silver for it's Green policy.
Green Tourism businesses are on a green journey, they have not reached perfection but they are focused on being sustainable, responsible and green. This is demonstrated through a three grading levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold).
Every two years we are visited and assessed by a qualified professional to ensure standards are maintained as follows:

There are three Green Tourism grading levels:
Bronze – Committed / Good
Typically has some ethical or green purchasing such as fair trade coffee and some local sourcing, has low energy lighting in most areas has good general recycling systems and promotes either local public transport or activities to do without the car such as walking and cycling. A green co-ordinator is working to reduce impacts in all key areas.
Silver – Progressive / Excellent
The business shares its values in going green to both staff and customers. With significant use of recycled products as well as recycling to close the loop. The business sources from ethical and local sources extensively and is working to green its whole supply chain. Energy and water efficiency are key issues with evidence of heating and lighting changes to be more efficient. Showers and taps are effective but not wasteful. Monitoring of resource use such as energy water and waste is helping to deliver significant changes.
Gold – Inspirational / Outstanding
The highest standards of sustainability are being achieved with a strong and broad ethos and excellent examples throughout. The latest technologies will be employed from LED lighting through to efficient boilers and even renewable technologies. The business has efficient control of resource use and can demonstrate effective monitoring with targets for savings. Green procurement will include sustainable fish/meat sources, a range of ethical products and working with local suppliers to provide fresh, local and even organic items . Changes in working practices are leading to significant benefits to the business, community and supply chain.
Suffolk Carbon Charter
The Suffolk Carbon Charter is an award recognising carbon reduction measures in Suffolk's small and medium businesses. The Swan currently holds Bronze in this award.
